Panama Canal Administrator Dismisses Claims of Foreign Control

Panama City, February 1, 2025 – The Administrator of the Panama Canal, Ricaurte Vásquez, has strongly denied recent claims that China exerts control over the canal, reaffirming Panama’s full authority over this critical global trade route.

Vásquez emphasized that the Panama Canal operates under a strict neutrality treaty, ensuring equal access to vessels from all nations. He clarified that while Chinese companies manage some port operations at both ends of the canal, their contracts were awarded through a transparent bidding process. Additionally, other international firms, including U.S. and Taiwanese companies, also play a role in various port operations.

The debate gained traction after recent remarks about the canal’s toll fees, with concerns raised over increased shipping costs. However, Panama remains firm in its stance, asserting that all toll adjustments are based on operational requirements and global trade demands.

Since its transfer from U.S. to Panamanian control in 1999, the canal has been managed by the Panama Canal Authority, ensuring smooth operations and fair trade practices. As one of the world’s most important maritime routes, it continues to play a vital role in global commerce, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans while reducing transit times and costs.

With ongoing discussions about trade policies and international shipping, Panama reiterates its commitment to maintaining the canal as a neutral and efficient global trade hub, ensuring seamless operations for all maritime stakeholders.
